Common Causes

By default, Windows 11 saves new documents, downloads, and app installations to your system drive (usually C:). Over time, this can fill up your local storage and slow down your computer. Changing the default save location allows you to store business files on a secondary internal drive, external drive, or network location, keeping your system drive clear and your data organised.

Quick Fix Steps

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System from the left-hand menu.
  3. Click Storage.
  4. Select Advanced storage settings.
  5. Click Where new content is saved.
  6. Use the dropdown menus to select a new drive for each content type.
  7. Click Apply.

Drive Not Appearing in the List

Warning: Do not remove or disconnect a drive while it is set as the default save location. Windows and your applications may fail to save files correctly, which could result in data loss. Always change the save location back to C: before removing a drive.
