Common Causes

Adjusting your screen resolution and scaling in Windows 11 allows you to customise how content appears on your monitor. Whether you need larger text for better visibility or more screen real estate to fit multiple windows, these settings help you optimise your display for comfort and productivity.

Change Display Scaling

Scaling increases the size of text, apps, and other UI elements without changing the resolution. This is useful if text appears too small on high-resolution monitors.

  1. Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
  2. In the left sidebar, select System, then click Display.
  3. Locate the Scale section under "Scale & layout".
  4. Click the dropdown menu and choose a percentage (e.g., 100%, 125%, or 150%).
  5. Windows will apply the change immediately. If the text is still too small, select a higher percentage.

Change Screen Resolution

Resolution determines the number of pixels on your screen. The "Recommended" setting is usually the native resolution of your monitor and provides the sharpest image.

  1. Open Settings and navigate to System > Display.
  2. Scroll down to the Display resolution dropdown.
  3. Select the resolution marked as (Recommended) for the best quality.
  4. If you select a different resolution, a prompt will appear asking if you want to keep the changes.
  5. Click Keep changes within 15 seconds, or Windows will automatically revert to the previous setting.
Tip: If you are using a laptop connected to an external monitor, select the specific monitor you wish to adjust from the top of the Display settings page before changing the resolution or scaling.

Troubleshooting

Resolution Options are Greyed Out

If you cannot change the resolution, it is often due to an outdated or missing graphics driver.

  1. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand the Display adapters category.
  3. Right-click your graphics card and select Update driver.
  4. Choose Search automatically for drivers and follow the prompts.
  5. Restart your computer and check the Display settings again.

Text Looks Blurry After Changing Resolution

Blurriness usually occurs when using a resolution that is not the monitor's native setting.

  1. Return to Settings > System > Display.
  2. Select the resolution marked as (Recommended).
  3. If text is still too small at the recommended resolution, adjust the Scale percentage instead of lowering the resolution.
Caution: Avoid selecting a resolution that is not supported by your monitor, as this may cause the screen to go blank. If this happens, wait 15 seconds for Windows to revert to the previous settings automatically.
