Common Causes

If you see a "Device Not Compliant" or "Device Not Managed" error when trying to access company emails, files, or applications in Microsoft 365, it means your device does not meet the security requirements set by your organisation. This is managed through Microsoft Intune and Conditional Access policies to protect business data.

Quick Fix Steps

  1. Ensure you are connected to the internet.
  2. Sign out of your Microsoft 365 account and sign back in.
  3. Restart your computer or mobile device.
  4. Check for and install any pending Windows or macOS updates.

Detailed Instructions

1. Enrol Your Device in Microsoft Intune

Your organisation requires devices to be enrolled in Intune to be recognised as managed.

  1. Open the Company Portal app on your device. If you do not have it, download it from the Microsoft Store or Apple App Store.
  2. Sign in with your work or school email address.
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to enrol your device.
  4. Once enrolled, wait a few minutes and try accessing the resource again.

2. Resolve Compliance Issues

If your device is enrolled but marked as non-compliant, check the following:

3. Synchronise Your Device

Sometimes the compliance status has been fixed on the server but hasn't updated on your device.

  1. Open the Company Portal app.
  2. Go to Settings or the device overview page.
  3. Select Sync or Check for updates.
  4. Wait for the synchronisation to complete and refresh your browser or app.

Troubleshooting

Windows Devices

  1. Go to Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.
  2. Select your work account and click Disconnect, then re-add the account.
  3. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run dsregcmd /refreshstate to refresh the device state.

macOS Devices

  1. Open System Settings > General > Software Update.
  2. Ensure the Company Portal app has the necessary permissions in Privacy & Security.
  3. Sign out of the Company Portal app and sign back in to trigger a fresh compliance check.

Mobile Devices (iOS/Android)

  1. Install the Microsoft Authenticator and Company Portal apps.
  2. Open the Company Portal app and complete the enrolment process.
  3. Ensure a device passcode is set in your device settings.
If you have recently changed your Windows password, you may need to update your cached credentials. Refer to our guide on Password reset (Windows login) for assistance.
Do not attempt to bypass security policies or remove management profiles, as this will result in continued loss of access to company resources.
