Common Causes

When Microsoft Outlook refuses to open or hangs on the "Loading Profile" screen, it usually points to a corrupted profile, a damaged data file, or a conflicting add-in. The good news is that most of these issues can be resolved without losing your emails, contacts, or calendar items. This guide walks you through the most effective fixes, starting with the quickest and moving to more advanced solutions.

If your emails are hosted with 220 and you need to verify your account settings at any point, see Setting Up an Email Account in Outlook (POP/IMAP/Exchange).

Quick Fix Steps

Before diving into detailed troubleshooting, try these fast solutions in order:

  1. Restart Outlook completely — right-click the Outlook icon in the system tray and select Close window, then reopen.
  2. Restart your computer to clear any locked processes.
  3. Check for Outlook updates via File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
  4. Start Outlook in Safe Mode by pressing Win + R, typing outlook.exe /safe, and pressing Enter. If Outlook opens in Safe Mode, an add-in is the culprit.
  5. Disable all COM add-ins via File > Options > Add-ins > Manage: COM Add-ins > Go, then uncheck each add-in and restart Outlook.
  6. Check that Outlook is not running in Compatibility Mode — right-click the Outlook shortcut, select Properties, go to the Compatibility tab, and ensure Run this program in compatibility mode for is unchecked.

If Outlook still won't load, proceed to the detailed instructions below.

Detailed Instructions

Step 1: Reset the Navigation Pane

A corrupted navigation pane configuration can cause Outlook to hang during startup. Resetting it forces Outlook to rebuild the layout.

  1. Close Outlook completely.
  2. Press Win + R, type outlook.exe /resetnavpane, and press Enter.
  3. Outlook will open with default navigation pane settings.

Step 2: Repair the Office Installation

A corrupted Office installation or data file can prevent Outlook from starting. Outlook includes a built-in repair tool that can fix many of these issues, including problems with OST (Offline Storage Table) files that may have become corrupted after unexpected shutdowns or sync errors.

  1. Close Outlook.
  2. Open the Control Panel and go to Programs > Programs and Features.
  3. Locate Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Outlook in the list, click it once, and select Change.
  4. Choose Online Repair (recommended) and click Repair.
  5. Restart your computer when the repair completes.
An Online Repair may take 15–30 minutes depending on your mailbox size and internet speed. Quick Repair is faster but less thorough.

If you need to back up your data before performing repairs, follow our guide to Backing Up and Restoring Outlook Data Files (.pst/.ost).

Step 3: Recreate the Outlook Profile

If the above steps haven't resolved the issue, your Outlook profile may be corrupted. Recreating it forces Outlook to build a fresh profile while preserving your existing data.

  1. Close Outlook.
  2. Open the Control Panel and switch to Large icons or Small icons view.
  3. Click Mail (Microsoft Outlook).
  4. Click Show Profiles.
  5. Click Add, enter a new profile name (for example, "Outlook 2024"), and click OK.
  6. Follow the prompts to add your email account. For hosted Exchange accounts, choose Manual setup or additional server types and enter your server details.
  7. Once the account is configured, return to the Mail dialog and under When starting Microsoft Outlook, use: select Prompt for a profile to be used. This lets you choose between profiles.
  8. Click Apply, then OK.
Recreating a profile does not delete your emails, contacts, or calendar items stored on the mail server. However, any locally stored PST files and offline OST data should be backed up first. Refer to Backing Up and Restoring Outlook Data Files for instructions.

Step 4: Check for Conflicting Processes

Sometimes another process running in the background can prevent Outlook from starting. Use Task Manager to check for and close any conflicting instances.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Look for any processes named Outlook.exe or Microsoft Outlook.
  3. Select each one and click End task.
  4. Also check for and close any instances of Lync.exe or Teams.exe if they are running, as these can occasionally interfere with Outlook.
  5. Try opening Outlook again.
