Common Causes

Leaving your computer unlocked while you step away — even for a moment — is one of the easiest ways for someone to access your business data, emails, or client information. This guide walks you through locking your Windows PC manually, setting up an automatic lock timer, and configuring Windows Hello for a faster sign-in when you return.

Quick Fix Steps

The fastest way to lock any Windows PC is with a keyboard shortcut:

Get into the habit of pressing Windows Key + L every time you stand up. It takes less than a second and is the single most effective physical security habit you can build.

Detailed Instructions

Locking via the Start Menu

If you prefer using the mouse or your keyboard shortcut isn't working, you can lock through the Start menu:

  1. Click the Start button in the bottom-left corner of your screen.
  2. Click your user account name or profile picture on the left side of the Start menu.
  3. Select Lock from the pop-up menu.

Setting Up an Automatic Screen Lock Timer

If you sometimes forget to lock your PC manually, Windows can lock itself automatically after a set period of inactivity. This is done through the screen saver settings:

  1. Press Windows Key + S to open the search bar.
  2. Type screen saver and select Change screen saver from the results.
  3. In the Screen Saver Settings window, set the Wait time to your preferred number of minutes (5 minutes is a good starting point for an office environment).
  4. Tick the box next to On resume, display logon screen.
  5. Click Apply, then click OK.
If the On resume, display logon screen option is greyed out or unavailable, your organisation may have applied a group policy that manages lock settings centrally. Contact your IT administrator or Open a Ticket for assistance.

Using Dynamic Lock with Your Phone (Windows 10 & 11)

Dynamic Lock automatically locks your PC when you walk away, using a paired Bluetooth device (like your mobile phone) to detect when you're no longer nearby.

  1. Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on both your PC and your phone, and pair them via Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
  2. Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
  3. Scroll to Dynamic lock and expand the section.
  4. Tick the box that says Allow Windows to use your devices to keep you signed in when you're nearby and lock your device when you leave.
  5. Click Pair a device and select your phone from the list.
Dynamic Lock can take up to 30 seconds to register that you've walked away. It's a helpful backup, but it shouldn't replace manually locking your screen with Windows Key + L.

Setting Up Windows Hello for Faster Sign-In

Once your PC is locked, you'll need to sign back in. Windows Hello lets you use a PIN, fingerprint, or facial recognition instead of typing a full password, making it quick to get back to work:

  1. Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
  2. Under Ways to sign in, select Windows Hello PIN, Facial recognition (Windows Hello), or Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello).
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to set up your chosen method.
  4. Once configured, enable For improved security, only allow Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts on this device if you want to bypass password entry entirely.
A Windows Hello PIN is tied to the specific device and does not travel across the internet like a password does. This makes it more secure than a traditional password, but it's still important to use a strong, unique PIN. If you've forgotten your Windows password and can't sign in at all, see our Password reset (Windows login) guide.

Troubleshooting

The Keyboard Shortcut Doesn't Work

If Windows Key + L doesn't lock your screen, the Windows key itself may be disabled. Some keyboards have a physical switch or function key toggle (often Fn + F-Lock) that enables or disables the Windows key. Check your keyboard manufacturer's documentation, or use the Start menu method described above as a workaround.

Dynamic Lock Isn't Working

If your PC isn't locking automatically when you walk away:

Automatic Lock Triggers Too Quickly

If your screen locks while you're still reading a document or on a call, increase the Wait time in the screen saver settings. Go back to Screen Saver Settings and adjust the timer to 10 or 15 minutes instead of 5.
