How to resolve 'Device not compliant' or 'Device not managed' errors when accessing company resources in Microsoft 365
Summary
This guide helps you troubleshoot and resolve: How to resolve 'Device not compliant' or 'Device not managed' errors when accessing company resources in Microsoft 365. Follow the steps below to fix the issue.
Common Causes
When you attempt to access company email, SharePoint, or other Microsoft 365 resources from a Windows 11 PC, you may see an error stating that your device is not compliant or not managed. This happens because your organization's Conditional Access policies require devices to meet specific security standards before granting access. Personal or unmanaged devices often fail these checks.
Quick Fix Steps
- Restart your computer and try signing in again.
- Ensure you are connected to the internet.
- Sign out of Microsoft 365 apps and sign back in using your work or school account.
- If you are using a personal device, register it with your organization's Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD).
Detailed Instructions
Register your Windows 11 device with your organization
- Select Start, then select Settings.
- Select Accounts from the left-hand menu.
- Select Access work or school.
- Select Connect.
- Enter your work or school email address and select Next.
- Follow the prompts to complete authentication and device registration.
- Restart your computer when prompted.
If your organization uses Microsoft Intune, you may be prompted to install the Company Portal app from the Microsoft Store during registration.
Check for Windows updates
- Select Start, then select Settings.
- Select Windows Update from the left-hand menu.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install any available updates and restart your computer.
Sign in with your work account
- Open a Microsoft 365 app such as Outlook or Teams.
- Select File > Account Settings > Account Settings (Outlook) or select your profile picture > Sign out (Teams).
- Sign back in using your full work email address and password.
- Complete any multi-factor authentication prompts.
Troubleshooting
Error persists after device registration
- Wait 15–30 minutes after registration, then try accessing the resource again. Compliance policies can take time to propagate.
- Ensure your device meets your organization's minimum security requirements, such as having a PIN or password enabled and BitLocker encryption turned on if required.
- Check that your device's date and time are set correctly. Select Settings > Time & language > Date & time and ensure Set time automatically is enabled.
Cannot access work or school account settings
- If your device is managed by another organization, you may need to disconnect that account first. Select Settings > Accounts > Access work or school, select the account, and choose Disconnect.
- If you forget your Windows login password, you can reset your Windows login password.
Warning: Do not attempt to bypass compliance policies by modifying system files or registry settings. This can result in permanent loss of access to company resources and may violate your organization's security policies.
