Common Causes

A "Blue Screen of Death" (BSOD) occurs when Windows 11 encounters a critical error that forces the system to restart to prevent damage to your hardware or data. While often alarming, these crashes are typically caused by outdated drivers, incompatible software, or failing hardware components. This guide will walk you through the process of identifying the cause and stabilising your system.

Quick Fix Steps

Before diving into advanced diagnostics, try these immediate steps to see if the issue is a one-off glitch:

Detailed Troubleshooting Instructions

Step 1: Identify the Stop Code

When the blue screen appears, Windows provides a Stop Code (e.g., CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED or MEMORY_MANAGEMENT) at the bottom of the screen. Note this code down or take a photo of it, as it is essential for pinpointing the exact cause.

Step 2: Update Windows and Drivers

Outdated system files or drivers are the most common cause of system instability. Ensure your organisation's devices are fully patched.

  1. Select Start > Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Click Check for updates and install all available patches.
  3. Navigate to Advanced options > Optional updates to check for driver updates.

For more information on maintaining your system, see How to update Windows or Troubleshooting Windows 11 Update Issues.

Step 3: Run Windows Memory Diagnostic

Faulty RAM can cause random system crashes. Windows has a built-in tool to analyse your memory for errors.

  1. Press Win + R, type mdsched.exe, and press Enter.
  2. Select Restart now and check for problems.
  3. Your computer will restart and run a scan. Once finished, Windows will boot back to the desktop and notify you of any hardware faults.

Step 4: Use System File Checker (SFC)

If system files have become corrupted, the SFC tool can automatically repair them.

  1. Right-click the Start button and select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  2. In the window, type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
  3. Wait for the scan to complete. If it finds and repairs corrupt files, restart your computer.
If the SFC scan cannot fix the files, you may need to run the DISM tool by typing DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth in the same Admin terminal.

Step 5: Boot into Safe Mode

If your computer crashes before you can reach the desktop, you must enter Safe Mode, which loads only the minimum required drivers.

  1. Hold the Shift key while selecting Power > Restart from the Start menu.
  2. After the PC restarts to the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  3. Press 4 or F4 to start the PC in Safe Mode.

While in Safe Mode, you can uninstall problematic software or drivers without the system crashing.

Advanced Recovery Options

System Restore

If the BSOD started after a specific update or software installation, you can roll your system back to a previous healthy state.

  1. Search for Create a restore point in the Start menu and open it.
  2. Click the System Restore... button.
  3. Follow the prompts to choose a date before the crashes began.
System Restore does not affect your personal files, but it will remove apps and drivers installed after the restore point was created.

Clean Installation

If you have exhausted all troubleshooting steps and the system remains unstable, a fresh installation of the operating system may be required to eliminate deep-seated software corruption.

Please refer to How to Perform a Clean Installation of Windows 11 for a detailed guide on this process.
