Common Causes

Windows 11 includes a feature called Virtual Desktops that lets you create multiple separate workspaces on a single computer. This is ideal for keeping your work applications, personal browsing, and project-specific windows organised without them all crowding onto one desktop. You can switch between desktops instantly, keeping your taskbar clean and your focus where it needs to be.

Quick Fix Steps

  1. Press Windows Key + Tab to open Task View.
  2. Click New desktop in the top-left corner.
  3. Select the new desktop thumbnail to switch to it.
  4. Open your applications and arrange your windows as needed.

Detailed Instructions

Creating a new virtual desktop

  1. Press Windows Key + Tab on your keyboard, or click the Task View button on the taskbar.
  2. In the top bar, select New desktop. A new desktop thumbnail will appear.
  3. Click the new desktop thumbnail to switch to it.
  4. Open the applications you want to use on this desktop.
You can create as many virtual desktops as you need. A common setup is one desktop for work, one for personal use, and one for specific projects.

Switching between desktops

Renaming a desktop

  1. Press Windows Key + Tab to open Task View.
  2. Click the name of the desktop at the top of its thumbnail.
  3. Type a new name, such as Work or Personal, and press Enter.

Moving a window between desktops

  1. Press Windows Key + Tab to open Task View.
  2. Right-click the window you want to move.
  3. Hover over Move to and select the destination desktop.

Closing a virtual desktop

  1. Press Windows Key + Tab to open Task View.
  2. Hover over the desktop thumbnail you want to remove.
  3. Click the X in the top-right corner of the thumbnail.
Closing a desktop does not close the applications running on it. Windows will move those windows to your remaining desktop.

Troubleshooting
