Common Causes

Microsoft Entra ID Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) allows your employees to reset their Microsoft 365 passwords independently. Instead of contacting 220 Internet Services every time a password is forgotten, authorised users can verify their identity and set a new password themselves, reducing downtime for your Brisbane small business.

Quick Fix Steps

  1. Ensure you have Global Administrator access to the Microsoft Entra admin centre.
  2. Enable SSPR for your organisation or specific user groups.
  3. Configure authentication methods such as email or phone verification.
  4. Ask users to register their verification details via the My Account portal.
  5. Users can then reset their password at the Microsoft 365 sign-in screen.

Detailed Instructions

Enable Self-Service Password Reset

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft Entra admin centre using a Global Administrator account.
  2. In the left-hand menu, select Identity, then choose Password reset.
  3. Under Properties, set Self service password reset enabled to Selected or All.
  4. Click Save.

Configure Authentication Methods

  1. Within the Password reset blade, select Authentication methods.
  2. Choose the number of methods required to reset a password (we recommend 2).
  3. Enable the available methods suitable for your team, such as:
    • Email address
    • Mobile phone
    • Office phone
    • Security questions
  4. Click Save.

Set Registration Requirements

  1. Select Registration from the Password reset menu.
  2. Set Require users to register when signing in to Yes.
  3. Set Number of days before users are asked to reconfirm their authentication information (for example, 180 days).
  4. Click Save.
Users must complete registration before they can use SSPR. If they have not registered their email or phone number, they will not be able to reset their password independently.

How Users Reset Their Password

  1. Go to the Microsoft 365 sign-in page and enter your email address.
  2. Click Forgot my password or Can't access your account?.
  3. Select I forgot my password and click Next.
  4. Enter the characters shown on screen and click Next.
  5. Choose a verification method (email or phone) and follow the prompts to receive a code.
  6. Enter the code and click Next.
  7. Create a new password that meets your organisation's requirements and click Finish.

Password Reset Does Not Sync to Windows Login

If a user resets their Microsoft 365 password via SSPR but cannot log into their Windows device, they may need to connect to the internet and sign in with the new credentials. For further assistance with Windows login issues, see our guide on Password reset (Windows login).

Do not share administrator credentials with staff members. SSPR is designed for end users to manage their own passwords without requiring admin intervention.
