Common Causes

Microsoft Family Safety is a free service that helps parents and guardians manage how children use Windows PCs, Xbox consoles, and mobile devices. It provides a centralised way to set screen time limits, filter inappropriate websites, review activity reports, and track location across family members' devices.

Requirements Before You Begin

To use Microsoft Family Safety, you will need:

Step 1: Create Your Family Group

  1. Open a web browser and go to account.microsoft.com/family.
  2. Sign in with your Microsoft account.
  3. Select Add a family member.
  4. Enter the email address or phone number associated with your child's Microsoft account.
  5. Choose Member as the role, then select Send invite.
  6. Ask your child to check their email or phone and accept the invitation.
If your child does not have a Microsoft account, select Create one for a child during the invitation process and follow the prompts to set up a new account.

Step 2: Install the Microsoft Family Safety App

While many settings can be managed through the website, installing the app makes it easier to manage rules on the go.

  1. On your phone or tablet, open the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android).
  2. Search for Microsoft Family Safety and install the app.
  3. Sign in with the same Microsoft account you used to create the family group.
  4. Grant the app the permissions it requests for location and notifications.
For Windows PCs and Xbox consoles, no separate app installation is required—Family Safety integrates directly with the Microsoft account signed into the device.

Step 3: Configure Screen Time Limits

  1. Go to account.microsoft.com/family and sign in.
  2. Select your child's profile from the family group.
  3. Choose Screen time from the left-hand menu.
  4. Toggle Use one schedule for all devices if you want the same limits across Windows and Xbox, or keep it off to set separate limits.
  5. Select a day of the week and set the allowed hours, then select Done.
  6. Repeat for each day as needed.

Step 4: Set Up Content Filters

  1. From your child's profile page, select Content filters.
  2. Under Apps and games, set the age limit to block apps and games rated above your chosen level.
  3. Under Web and search, toggle Filter inappropriate websites and searches to On.
  4. Optionally, add specific websites to the Allowed sites or Blocked sites lists.
  5. Select Save to apply your changes.
Web filtering works best on Microsoft Edge. If your child uses other browsers, you may need to block those browsers individually under Apps and games.

Step 5: Review Activity Reports

  1. Select your child's profile on the Family Safety website.
  2. Choose Activity from the menu.
  3. Toggle Activity reporting to On if it is not already enabled.
  4. Review recent web searches, apps used, games played, and screen time usage.
  5. Use the Email weekly reports toggle to receive summaries in your inbox.

Step 6: Manage Xbox Settings

Because Xbox uses the same Microsoft account, screen time and content restrictions set in Family Safety apply automatically. To adjust Xbox-specific privacy and online safety settings:

  1. Sign in to account.xbox.com with your child's account (or your organiser account with family management rights).
  2. Go to Profile > Xbox settings > Privacy & online safety.
  3. Adjust settings for communication, multiplayer, and content sharing as needed.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Child Cannot Sign In to Windows

Ensure your child is signing in with their own Microsoft account, not yours. Family Safety controls are tied to the child's account, not the parent's.

Web Filter Not Working

Confirm that your child is using Microsoft Edge and that Filter inappropriate websites and searches is enabled. Other browsers may bypass filters unless explicitly blocked.

Screen Time Limits Not Applying

Check that the device is connected to the internet and that your child is signed in with their Microsoft account. Limits may take a few minutes to sync after changes.

Invite Not Received

Ask your child to check their junk or spam folder. You can also resend the invitation from account.microsoft.com/family by selecting their profile and choosing Resend invite.

Microsoft Family Safety is designed for family use. If you need to manage multiple employee devices in a small business environment, consider a dedicated mobile device management (MDM) solution instead.
