Common Causes

Storage Sense is a built-in Windows 11 feature that automatically clears out temporary files and empties your Recycle Bin on a schedule you define. Once configured, it runs quietly in the background, helping you maintain free disk space without needing to manually clean up your system. This guide walks you through enabling Storage Sense, customising its behaviour, and troubleshooting common issues.

Quick Fix Steps

  1. Open Settings by pressing Windows + I.
  2. Navigate to System > Storage.
  3. Toggle Storage Sense to On.
  4. Click Storage Sense to expand configuration options.
  5. Adjust the run frequency and cleanup preferences to suit your needs.
  6. Click Run Storage Sense now to perform an immediate cleanup.

Detailed Instructions

Accessing Storage Settings

  1. Click the Start button and select Settings, or press Windows + I.
  2. In the left-hand pane, click System.
  3. Scroll down and select Storage from the right-hand pane.

Enabling Storage Sense

  1. At the top of the Storage page, locate the Storage Sense toggle.
  2. Switch the toggle to On.
  3. Click the Storage Sense heading to open the detailed configuration page.

Configuring Cleanup Frequency

Under Run Storage Sense, choose how often Windows should perform automatic cleanups:

For most users, Every week provides a good balance between keeping disk space free and avoiding unnecessary file deletion.

Setting Recycle Bin Behaviour

  1. Scroll to the Delete files in my recycle bin if they have been there for over option.
  2. Select a timeframe from the dropdown. Options range from Never to 60 days.
  3. Choose 14 days or 30 days for a sensible default that protects against accidental deletion while still freeing space.

Configuring Temporary File Cleanup

  1. Locate Delete temporary files that my apps aren't using.
  2. Toggle this option to On to allow Windows to remove unused temporary files.
Temporary files include items left behind by applications, Windows Update cache, and other system-generated data. These are generally safe to remove.

Setting Downloads Folder Behaviour

  1. Find the Delete files in my Downloads folder if they haven't been opened for more than option.
  2. Select a timeframe or choose Never if you prefer to manage this folder manually.
Enabling automatic deletion of Downloads folder contents can result in lost files. Only enable this if you regularly move or back up downloaded files elsewhere.

Running Storage Sense Immediately

  1. At the top of the configuration page, click Run Storage Sense now.
  2. Windows will scan for and remove eligible files immediately rather than waiting for the next scheduled run.
  3. You can monitor progress under Storage in Settings, where a message will display while cleanup is in progress.

Verifying Storage Sense Is Working

  1. Return to Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Review the breakdown of storage usage by category (Apps, Documents, Temporary files, etc.).
  3. Check that the Temporary files section shows recent activity.
  4. Confirm the Recycle Bin shows no items older than your configured threshold.

Troubleshooting

Storage Sense Toggle Is Greyed Out

If the Storage Sense toggle cannot be switched on:

Storage Sense Is Not Deleting Files

If Storage Sense runs but does not appear to remove files:

Files Are Being Deleted Too Quickly

If important files are being removed before you can use them:

  1. Open Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense.
  2. Increase the Recycle Bin retention period or set it to Never.
  3. Disable automatic Downloads folder cleanup if it is enabled.
  4. Move important working files out of the Downloads folder and into a dedicated Documents or project folder.

Checking Storage Sense Logs

Windows logs Storage Sense activity, which can help diagnose issues:

  1. Press Windows + R, type eventvwr.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Navigate to Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > StorageSense > Operational.
  3. Review recent entries for details on what was cleaned and when.

Best Practices

If you continue to experience low disk space after enabling Storage Sense, consider moving large files to an external drive or cloud storage, or upgrading your system storage. For further assistance, Open a Ticket with our support team.
