Common Causes

Windows Hello face recognition lets you sign in to your Windows 11 device using your face instead of a password. It's faster, more secure, and works with compatible infrared (IR) cameras built into most modern laptops and some external webcams. This guide walks you through setting it up, using it day-to-day, and fixing common issues.

Before You Start

Check that your device supports Windows Hello face recognition. You'll need:

A Windows 11 PC with an integrated IR camera, or an external IR webcam that supports Windows Hello
An active internet connection for the initial setup
A working PIN as a backup sign-in method

Most laptops released since 2018 with Windows Hello branding support face recognition. If you're unsure, check your device manufacturer's specifications or look for a small camera lens near the webcam.

Set Up Windows Hello Face Recognition

Open Settings by pressing Windows + I.
Click Accounts in the left sidebar.
Select Sign-in options.
Under Ways to sign in, locate Face recognition (Windows Hello).
Click Set up to launch the setup wizard.
Click Get started, then enter your current PIN or password to verify your identity.
Position your face directly in front of the camera, centred in the frame.
Look straight at the camera until the setup completes.
Click Close to finish.

If you haven't set up a PIN yet, Windows will prompt you to create one first. Your PIN is used as a backup if face recognition can't read your face.

Use Face Recognition to Sign In

Once configured, signing in is straightforward:

Wake your device or press the power button.
Look at the camera. Windows will attempt to recognise your face automatically.
If recognition succeeds, you'll be signed in immediately.
If it fails after a couple of attempts, Windows will offer your PIN as a fallback.

Improve Recognition Accuracy

If Windows struggles to recognise your face, try these adjustments:

Make sure your face is well-lit and not backlit by windows or bright lights
Remove sunglasses, hats, or face coverings during sign-in
Sit at a normal distance from the screen, roughly 50 to 80 centimetres
Clean the camera lens with a soft, dry cloth
Update your Windows Hello data after significant appearance changes (see below)

Update Your Face Data

Windows Hello adapts to gradual changes, but you can manually refresh the stored data:

Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
Under Face recognition (Windows Hello), click Improve recognition.
Follow the prompts to capture your face in different lighting conditions.

Troubleshooting

Face Recognition Option Is Missing

Confirm your camera is an IR-capable Windows Hello device. Standard webcams won't appear as an option.
Open Device Manager, expand Cameras, and check that your camera drivers are installed without warning icons.
Update Windows through Settings > Windows Update and install any pending updates.

Camera Doesn't Work During Setup

Close any apps that might be using the camera (Zoom, Teams, Skype, browser tabs).
Check Settings > Privacy & security > Camera and ensure Camera access is turned on.
Restart your device and try again.

Recognition Fails Repeatedly

Use Improve recognition to retrain the system with current lighting and appearance.
Remove face recognition and set it up again from scratch:
1. Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
2. Click Remove under Face recognition (Windows Hello).
3. Restart your device, then set up face recognition again.
Check for Windows updates, as driver fixes are often delivered through Windows Update.

Can't Sign In at All

Never disable your PIN or password entirely while relying on face recognition. The PIN is your essential backup if the camera fails or lighting conditions prevent recognition.

Privacy and Security Notes

Face data is stored locally on your device using encryption and is not sent to Microsoft or any external servers.
Face recognition works offline once configured.
You can remove face data at any time from Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
For business devices managed by your organisation, some options may be controlled by your IT administrator.
