Common Causes

Windows Hello is a biometric and PIN-based sign-in method built into Windows 11 that lets you unlock your computer using your face, fingerprint, or a local PIN instead of a traditional password. It is faster, more secure against phishing, and tied directly to your device, making it an excellent choice for small business and home office users who want stronger protection without the hassle of typing complex passwords every time.

Before You Begin

Before setting up Windows Hello, confirm that your device meets the requirements:

If your hardware does not support biometrics, you can still set up a Windows Hello PIN, which is faster and often more secure than a password.

Quick Fix Steps

  1. Open Settings by pressing Windows + I.
  2. Navigate to Accounts, then select Sign-in options.
  3. Choose Face recognition, Fingerprint recognition, or PIN depending on your hardware.
  4. Click Set up and follow the on-screen prompts.
  5. Test the new sign-in method by locking your PC with Windows + L.

Detailed Instructions

Setting Up Facial Recognition

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Click Accounts in the left sidebar, then select Sign-in options.
  3. Under Ways to sign in, locate Face recognition (Windows Hello).
  4. Click Set up. A setup wizard will open.
  5. Click Get started and enter your current PIN or password to confirm your identity.
  6. Position your face centred in the frame, looking directly at the camera. The system will capture your facial data.
  7. Once complete, click Close.
  8. Optionally, toggle Improve recognition to allow Windows to learn your appearance over time, which helps with glasses, hats, or lighting changes.

Setting Up Fingerprint Recognition

  1. Open Settings using Windows + I.
  2. Go to Accounts, then Sign-in options.
  3. Find Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello) and click Set up.
  4. Click Get started and authenticate with your PIN.
  5. Lift and rest your finger on the sensor repeatedly until the progress bar completes. You will be asked to lift and reposition your finger from different angles.
  6. Click Add another finger if you want to register a backup, then click Close.
Registering two fingers (for example, both index fingers) is recommended so you always have a backup if one hand is occupied.

Setting Up a Windows Hello PIN

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Accounts, then Sign-in options.
  3. Locate PIN (Windows Hello) and click Set up.
  4. Click Create your PIN and enter a PIN. You may include letters, numbers, and symbols. Confirm it by entering it again.
  5. Click OK to finish.
A Windows Hello PIN is stored locally on your device using hardware encryption and is not transmitted to Microsoft. It is different from the PIN you might use with your bank or phone. Choose a PIN that is hard to guess, but do not reuse it across services.
