Whether you are clearing space on your device or securing important business documents, transferring files from an Android device to a Windows PC ensures your data is safe and accessible. This guide covers the most reliable methods for manual transfers.

Method 1: Using a USB Cable (Manual Transfer)

This is the fastest method for moving large volumes of data, such as high-resolution videos and photo libraries.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Connect your Android device to your Windows PC using a compatible USB cable.
Unlock your phone screen. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the Notification Shade.
Look for a notification that says Charging this device via USB and tap it.
Under the Use USB for menu, select File Transfer or MTP.
On your Windows PC, open File Explorer (Windows Key + E).
In the left-hand sidebar, click on This PC and double-click your Android device.
Navigate to the Internal Storage folder. Common file locations include:
- Photos and Videos: Internal Storage > DCIM > Camera
- Downloads: Internal Storage > Download
- Documents: Internal Storage > Documents
Select the files or folders you wish to back up, right-click and select Copy (or Ctrl + C).
Navigate to the folder on your PC where you want to store the backup, right-click, and select Paste (or Ctrl + V).

On your Android device, open the Google Drive app.
Tap the + (Plus) icon in the bottom right corner and select Upload.
Select the files or photos you wish to transfer and tap Select.
Once the upload is complete, go to your PC and open a web browser.
Navigate to drive.google.com and log in with your Google account.
Right-click the uploaded files and select Download to save them locally to your Windows PC.

Caution: Ensure you are connected to a stable Wi-Fi network when uploading large files to avoid excessive mobile data charges from your provider.

Troubleshooting Common Connection Issues

If your Windows PC does not recognise your Android device, try the following steps to analyse the problem:

PC does not detect the device

Check the Cable: Ensure you are using a data-sync cable. Some cables are designed for charging only and will not allow file transfers.
Try a Different Port: Plug the cable into a different USB port on your PC, preferably one directly on the motherboard if using a desktop.
Unlock the Device: Windows cannot access the file system if the Android device is locked with a PIN or biometric security.

Files are not appearing in File Explorer

Verify that you have selected File Transfer mode in the Android USB settings. By default, most devices start in Charging only mode for security reasons.
Restart both the Android device and the Windows PC to refresh the hardware handshake.
