Windows File History is a built-in backup tool in Windows 11 that automatically saves copies of your files to an external drive or network location. If you accidentally delete a document, overwrite a spreadsheet, or need to revert to an earlier version of a file, File History allows you to restore previous versions without needing third-party software.

Quick Fix Steps

  1. Open File Explorer and navigate to the folder containing the file.
  2. Right-click the file or folder and select Properties.
  3. Click the Previous Versions tab.
  4. Select a version from the list and click Restore.

Check If File History Is Turned On

File History only backs up files in your Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos, and Desktop folders by default, plus OneDrive files available offline on this PC. If your files are stored elsewhere, move them into one of these folders or add the folder to File History manually.
If you have never set up File History or your backup drive was disconnected, previous versions may not be available. In that case, you may need to restore from a different backup solution.
