  3. Check that the Link/Activity LED is illuminated on the port for each connected device.
  4. Power cycle the switch: unplug it, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
  5. Test a different Ethernet cable — faulty cables are the most common cause of switch connectivity issues.

Detailed Instructions

Step 1: Unpack and position the switch

Place the switch in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Avoid stacking it on top of other networking equipment, as this can cause overheating. If the switch is rack-mountable and you have a small cabinet, mount it securely using the included brackets.

Step 2: Connect the uplink to your router

Your switch needs a connection to your existing network. This is called the uplink.

  1. Locate an available LAN port on your router or modem.
  2. Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to that LAN port.
  3. Connect the other end to the switch. On unmanaged switches, any port will work. On managed switches, use the port labelled Uplink or port 1.
  4. Confirm the Link LED lights up on both the router and the switch.
Tip: If your router and switch both support Gigabit Ethernet, use Cat 5e or Cat 6 cables to achieve full speed. Older Cat 5 cables may limit you to 100 Mbps.

Step 3: Connect your office devices

  1. Run Ethernet cables from the switch to each computer, printer, VoIP phone, or other wired device.
  2. Plug each cable into any available port on the switch.
  3. Check that the corresponding Link/Activity LED illuminates for each connected port.
  4. On each computer, confirm the network connection is active by checking the system tray or menu bar network icon.

Step 4: Configure a managed switch (if applicable)

If you purchased an unmanaged switch, no configuration is required — it works out of the box. If you have a managed switch, follow these steps to access its administration interface.

  1. Connect a computer directly to the switch using an Ethernet cable.
  2. Open a web browser and enter the switch's default IP address. Common defaults include 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1, or 192.168.0.239. Check the manufacturer's label on the underside of the switch for the exact address.
  3. Log in with the default credentials. These are typically admin for both username and password, but check the label or manual.
  4. Change the default password immediately to secure your network.
  5. Assign a static IP address to the switch that is outside your router's DHCP range to avoid conflicts.
  6. If your network uses VLANs, configure the appropriate VLAN tagging on each port as required by your network design.
  7. Save the configuration before exiting.
Important: Changing VLAN or port settings incorrectly can disconnect devices from the network. Document your current settings before making changes, and test one port at a time.

Step 5: Verify connectivity

  1. On a connected computer, open a web browser and navigate to any website.

  3. To test internal connectivity, open Command Prompt (Windows) or Terminal (macOS) and type ping 192.168.1.1 (replace with your router's IP address). You should see replies.
