Common Causes

An IP address conflict occurs when two devices on the same network are assigned the same IP address. This typically results in intermittent internet dropouts, "Windows has detected an IP address conflict" errors, or devices being unable to access shared network resources. This guide will help you identify and resolve IP conflicts on your Brisbane small business network.

Quick Fix Steps

  1. Restart your modem and router.
  2. Restart the affected computer or device.
  3. Release and renew your IP address.

Detailed Instructions

Restart Your Network Equipment

  1. Power off your modem and router.
  2. Wait at least 30 seconds to ensure all residual power is cleared.
  3. Power the modem back on first and wait for the connection lights to stabilise.
  4. Power the router back on.
  5. Restart your computer or device.

Release and Renew IP Address (Windows)

  1. Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type cmd and press Enter.
  3. In the Command Prompt, type ipconfig /release and press Enter.
  4. Type ipconfig /renew and press Enter.
  5. Type exit and press Enter to close the window.
If you are using a static IP address assigned by 220 Internet Services, releasing and renewing will not change your IP. Please ensure you are using DHCP (Automatic) unless specifically instructed otherwise.

  1. Click the Apple menu and select System Settings.
  2. Click Network in the sidebar.
  3. Select your active connection (Wi-Fi or Ethernet).
  4. Click Details next to the connection.
  5. Click TCP/IP in the sidebar.
  6. Click the Renew DHCP Lease button.

Troubleshooting

Check for Static IP Assignments

If a device has a manually assigned static IP that overlaps with your router's DHCP range, a conflict will occur.

Windows

  1. Open Settings and go to Network & internet.
  2. Select Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  3. Click on your connected network.
  4. Next to IP assignment, click Edit.
  5. Ensure it is set to Automatic (DHCP). If it is set to Manual, change it to Automatic and click Save.

macOS

  1. Open System Settings and go to Network.
  2. Select your connection and click Details.
  3. Click TCP/IP.
  4. Ensure Configure IPv4 is set to Using DHCP.

Check for Duplicate Devices

If the conflict persists, check if you have an old laptop, phone, or IoT device that is powered on and holding the same address. Powering off unused devices can often clear the conflict immediately.

Avoid manually assigning IP addresses to devices unless you have documented your network's IP range. Incorrect manual configuration can cause further connectivity issues.
