Common Causes

macOS Continuity Camera lets you use your iPhone as a wireless webcam for FaceTime, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and other video apps on your Mac. When it stops working, the connection usually fails because of a simple setting, an outdated operating system, or a temporary Bluetooth or Wi-Fi hiccup. This guide walks you through the most common fixes, starting with the quickest checks and moving on to more detailed troubleshooting.

Quick Fix Steps

Try these steps first. Most Continuity Camera issues are resolved here.

  1. Confirm both devices meet the system requirements (see below).
  2. Sign in to the same Apple ID on both your Mac and iPhone.
  3. Enable Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff on both devices.
  4. Restart your iPhone, then restart your Mac.
  5. Place your iPhone close to your Mac, unlocked and connected to power.
Continuity Camera works best when your iPhone is within a few metres of your Mac, with no thick walls or large metal objects between them.

System Requirements

Before troubleshooting further, confirm your devices support Continuity Camera.

Detailed Instructions

1. Check Apple ID and Two-Factor Authentication

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings > [your name]. Note the Apple ID shown.
  2. On your iPhone, open Settings and tap your name at the top. Confirm the Apple ID matches exactly.
  3. On your iPhone, go to Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security. Ensure Two-Factor Authentication is on.
  4. If either account is different, sign out and sign back in with the matching Apple ID.

2. Enable Handoff on Both Devices

  1. On your Mac, open System Settings > General > AirDrop & Handoff (or Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices on older versions).
  2. Turn on Handoff.
  3. On your iPhone, go to Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity > Handoff and turn it on.

3. Confirm Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Are Active

  1. On your Mac, click the Control Centre icon in the menu bar. Ensure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are both on and connected.
  2. On your iPhone, swipe down from the top-right corner and confirm Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled.
  3. Both devices must be on the same Wi-Fi network. Hotspot connections do not work.
If your Mac is connected to the internet over Ethernet, temporarily connect it to Wi-Fi as well. Continuity Camera requires an active Wi-Fi connection, even if you are not using it for internet access.

4. Restart Both Devices in the Correct Order

  1. Restart your iPhone first: hold the side button and either volume button, then slide to power off.
  2. After the iPhone has fully restarted, restart your Mac: choose Apple menu > Restart.
  3. Unlock your iPhone and place it near your Mac.
  4. Open FaceTime, Zoom, or Microsoft Teams on your Mac and look for the Continuity Camera option in the video device menu.

5. Select Your iPhone as the Camera

  1. Open the video app you want to use (for example, FaceTime, Zoom, or Microsoft Teams).
  2. In the app's video settings, choose your iPhone from the camera list. It usually appears as Your Name's iPhone.
  3. If your iPhone does not appear, close and reopen the app while your iPhone is unlocked and nearby.

6. Update macOS and iOS

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update and install any available updates.
  2. On your iPhone, open Settings > General > Software Update and install any available updates.
  3. Restart both devices after updating.

Troubleshooting

If the quick steps did not resolve the issue, work through these additional checks.

Disable Personal Hotspot and VPNs

  1. On your iPhone, open Settings > Personal Hotspot and turn it off.
  2. On your Mac, disconnect any active VPN session in System Settings > Network or in your VPN app.
  3. On your iPhone, disconnect any active VPN in Settings > General > VPN & Device Management.
  4. Test Continuity Camera again.

Reset Network Settings on iPhone

  1. Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
  2. Enter your passcode and confirm.
  3. Reconnect to your Wi-Fi network and test again.

Sign Out of iCloud and Sign Back In

  1. On your Mac, open System Settings > [your name] and click Sign Out.
  2. On your iPhone, open Settings > [your name] > Sign Out.

Check for Interference

Test in a Different Application

  1. Open Photo Booth on your Mac (found in Applications).
  2. Click the camera dropdown and look for your iPhone.
  3. If your iPhone appears in Photo Booth but not in your video app, the issue is with that specific app. Check the app's settings or reinstall it.

Try a Different User Account on Mac

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Settings > Users & Groups.
  2. Add a new test user account if you do not already have a second one.
  3. Sign in to the new account and test Continuity Camera.
  4. If it works in the new account, the issue is with your original user profile. Sign out of the original account and reset its settings, or migrate to a fresh profile.

Reset the Bluetooth Module on Mac

  1. Hold Shift + Option and click the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar.
  2. Choose Reset the Bluetooth Module from the hidden menu.
  3. Click OK to confirm.

If the Bluetooth icon does not appear in the menu bar, open System Settings > Control Centre and enable Show in Menu Bar for Bluetooth.
