Common Causes

Following an NBN outage, your Windows 11 computer may reconnect to your local Wi-Fi network but fail to access the internet. This usually happens because the device is holding onto outdated network settings or a corrupted DNS cache. This guide provides steps to restore your connection without needing to reset your entire network.

Quick Fix Steps

  1. Restart your Windows 11 computer.
  2. Power cycle your NBN connection box and Wi-Fi router.
  3. Run the built-in Windows Network Troubleshooter.
  4. Flush your DNS cache.
  5. Reset your network stack.

Detailed Instructions

1. Restart Your Computer

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Click the Power icon.
  3. Select Restart.

2. Power Cycle Your NBN Equipment

  1. Turn off your NBN connection box and your Wi-Fi router.
  2. Unplug both devices from the power outlet.
  3. Wait at least 30 seconds to allow capacitors to discharge.
  4. Plug the NBN connection box back in first and wait for the lights to stabilise.
  5. Plug the Wi-Fi router back in and wait for it to fully boot up.

3. Run the Windows Network Troubleshooter

  1. Click Start and select Settings (the gear icon).
  2. In the left sidebar, click Network & internet.
  3. Click Advanced network settings.
  4. Under "More settings", click Network troubleshooter.
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts to diagnose and fix connection issues.

Note: If the troubleshooter suggests resetting your adapter, proceed with the reset. This will not delete your files, but it will remove saved Wi-Fi passwords.

4. Flush Your DNS Cache

  1. Press Windows Key + S to open Search.
  2. Type cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator.
  3. Type the following command and press Enter: ipconfig /flushdns
  4. Wait for the message confirming the DNS resolver cache was successfully flushed.
  5. Close the Command Prompt window.

5. Reset the Network Stack

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
  2. Type the following commands one by one, pressing Enter after each:
    • netsh winsock reset
    • netsh int ip reset
    • ipconfig /release
    • ipconfig /renew
  3. Restart your computer to apply the changes.

Troubleshooting

Check if Other Devices Are Affected

Try connecting a smartphone or tablet to the same Wi-Fi network. If other devices also cannot access the internet, the issue is likely with your NBN connection or router, not your Windows 11 PC. In this case, please Open a Ticket.

Forget and Reconnect to Wi-Fi

  1. Open Settings and go to Network & internet.
  2. Click Wi-Fi, then select Manage known networks.
  3. Find your network in the list and click Forget.
  4. Reconnect to the network by selecting it from the Wi-Fi icon in the taskbar and entering your password.

Note: For more information on connecting to your network, see our guide on How to connect to Wi-Fi.

Warning: Avoid performing a full factory reset on your NBN connection box unless instructed by 220 Internet Services support, as this may require reconfiguration of your service.
