Common Causes
Configuration profiles are XML files used to manage settings on macOS devices. While legitimate profiles are often installed by IT providers to enforce security policies or configure email and Wi-Fi, malicious or unauthorised profiles can restrict system settings, redirect network traffic, or change browser behaviour without your knowledge. If you notice settings that appear locked or unexpected changes to your Mac, you should review and remove any profiles you did not authorise.
Quick Fix Steps
- Open System Settings from the Apple menu.
- Navigate to Privacy & Security.
- Scroll down and select Profiles.
- Select any unauthorised profile and click Remove.
- Enter your administrator password to confirm.
Detailed Instructions
Checking for Configuration Profiles
- Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen.
- Select System Settings.
- In the sidebar, click Privacy & Security.
- Scroll to the bottom of the right-hand panel.
- If profiles are installed, you will see a Profiles section. Click it to view the list.
If you do not see a Profiles section, no configuration profiles are currently installed on your user account.
Removing a Malicious Profile
- In the Profiles list, select the profile you wish to remove.
- Click the Remove button (minus icon) below the list.
- When prompted, enter your Mac administrator username and password.
- Click OK to confirm removal.
- Restart your Mac to ensure all changes take effect.
Do not remove profiles installed by your organisation's IT provider unless instructed to do so. Removing a legitimate profile may disable corporate Wi-Fi, email, or security settings.
Verifying Removal
- Return to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Profiles.
- Confirm the unauthorised profile no longer appears in the list.
- Check that previously restricted settings, such as Safari homepage or network preferences, are now editable.
Troubleshooting
Profile Will Not Remove
- Ensure you are logged in as an administrator. Standard user accounts cannot remove configuration profiles.
- Restart your Mac and attempt removal again.
- If the profile reappears after removal, it may be reinstalled by a mobile device management (MDM) server. Contact your IT provider for assistance.
Profiles Option Is Missing
- The Profiles option only appears in System Settings when at least one profile is installed.
- If you suspect a profile is installed but do not see the option, check for third-party management software in Applications.
