- Save your work and close any programs you are not actively using, especially browser tabs and video calls.
- Move the laptop to a hard, flat surface so the vents on the bottom and sides are not blocked.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Escand sort the Processes tab by CPU to find anything chewing through resources. - Restart the laptop. A fresh boot clears stuck processes and resets thermal management.
- If the noise persists, run Windows Update and let it install any pending driver or firmware updates.

1. Clear Dust From the Vents and Fan
Dust is the single most common cause of overheating on laptops that are more than 12 months old. Lint and pet hair clog the heatsink fins and force the fan to spin faster to move the same amount of air.
- Shut the laptop down completely — do not just sleep or hibernate it.
- Unplug the charger and remove the battery if your model allows it.
- Use a can of compressed air to blow short bursts into the side and rear exhaust vents. Hold the can upright and keep the nozzle a few centimetres away from the vents.
- If your laptop has a bottom access panel, remove it and blow dust out of the fan blades directly. Hold the fan still with a finger or a cotton bud so it does not spin from the air pressure, which can damage the bearings.
- Reassemble, boot up, and listen for improvement.
2. Identify Resource-Hungry Processes
Software is the second most common culprit. A runaway process can pin the CPU at 100% and force the fan to stay at maximum.
- Press
