Common Causes

Ghosting, shadows, or double images on printouts usually indicate an issue with the printer's drum unit, fuser, paper handling, or driver settings. This guide walks you through the most common causes and how to resolve them, starting with the simplest fixes first.

Detailed Troubleshooting

Step 1: Identify Where the Problem Originates

Before changing any settings, determine whether the fault is with the printer hardware or your computer's print job.

  1. On the printer's control panel, navigate to Settings or Menu > Reports or Print Quality Report.
  2. Print the report and inspect it for ghosting or shadows.
  3. If the report is clean, the issue lies with your computer's print settings or driver. Skip to Step 4.
  4. If the report shows the same fault, continue with Step 2.
If the test page from the printer's own menu also shows ghosting, the problem is almost certainly hardware-related (drum, fuser, or rollers) rather than a driver or software issue.

Step 2: Inspect the Drum Unit

The drum unit is the most common cause of ghosting and double images, particularly on laser printers. Ghosting typically appears as a faint repeat of the image a few centimetres below or beside the original.

  1. Switch off the printer and open the front or top cover to access the toner cartridge area.
  2. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly.
  3. Check the drum for visible scratches, dents, or a worn coating. If damaged, the drum unit will need replacement.
  4. If your printer has a drum cleaning cycle in its menu, run it now.
  5. Reinstall the assembly and close the cover securely.
Do not touch the drum surface with bare fingers or expose it to direct sunlight. Oils from skin and UV light can permanently damage the photoconductor surface. Do not use water, solvents, or household cleaners on the drum.

Step 3: Check the Fuser Unit

If ghosting appears consistently at the same interval on every page (for example, every 75mm or 110mm), the fuser is likely failing to bond toner properly to the paper. This causes a faint "echo" of the image as the paper passes through.

  1. Switch off the printer and allow it to cool for at least 15 minutes.
  2. Open the rear access door (on most laser printers) to expose the fuser.
  3. Inspect the fuser rollers for toner buildup, tears in the fuser film, or visible damage.
  4. If the fuser film is torn or the rollers are warped, the fuser assembly must be replaced by a technician.
Fuser replacement is generally a job for a service technician. If your printer is under warranty or covered by a service agreement, contact your manufacturer or authorised service provider before attempting this yourself.

Step 4: Verify Paper Type and Quality Settings

Mismatched paper type settings cause the fuser to apply incorrect heat and pressure, leading to incomplete toner bonding and shadowing.

  1. On Windows, open the print dialog from your application and click Printer Properties or Preferences.
  2. On macOS, open System Settings > Printers & Scanners, select your printer, and click Options & Supplies > Driver or Settings.
  3. Locate the Paper Type or Media Type option and ensure it matches the paper in the tray exactly.
  4. Set Print Quality to Normal or High rather than Draft or Toner Save.
  5. Print a test page and check for improvement.

Step 5: Update or Reinstall the Printer Driver

An outdated or corrupted driver can cause the printer to misinterpret image data, producing duplicated or shifted output.

Windows 10 and 11

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  2. Select your printer and click Printer properties.
  3. Click the Advanced tab, then New Driver or Update Driver.
  4. Alternatively, download the latest driver from the printer manufacturer's website and run the installer.

macOS

  1. Open System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  2. Select your printer and click Remove Printer.
  3. Download the latest driver from the manufacturer's website, install it, then re-add the printer.
Always download drivers directly from the manufacturer's official website (Brother, Canon, HP, Epson, Kyocera, etc.) rather than third-party driver sites.

Step 6: Check the Paper Path and Rollers

Worn or dirty pickup rollers can cause paper to feed unevenly, producing misaligned double images.

  1. Switch off the printer and unplug it from power.
  2. Open all paper path access doors (front, rear, and duplex unit if fitted).
  3. Inspect the rollers for toner buildup, paper dust, or wear marks.
  4. Clean accessible rollers with a dry, lint-free cloth. For stubborn buildup, use a cloth lightly moistened with isopropyl alcohol and allow the rollers to dry completely before use.
  5. Remove any paper fragments or jammed sheets from the paper path.
  6. Close all covers, plug the printer back in, and print a test page.

When the Issue Persists

If ghosting or double images continue after completing all the steps above, the printer likely requires professional service. Common causes at this stage include:
