Common Causes

It can be frustrating when a program stops responding, leaving you unable to click buttons or close the window. Instead of restarting your entire computer and losing unsaved work in other applications, you can use the Windows Task Manager to force-quit the specific program that has frozen.

Quick Fix Steps

If you need to close a frozen application immediately, use this keyboard shortcut sequence:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager directly.
  2. Select the unresponsive application from the list.
  3. Click End task in the bottom right corner.

Detailed Instructions

Opening Task Manager

Depending on the state of your computer, there are three ways to access the Task Manager:

Closing the Unresponsive Application

  1. Once Task Manager is open, ensure you are on the Processes tab.
  2. If you only see a small window with a few apps, click More details at the bottom to expand the view.
  3. Look through the Apps section for the program that is frozen. It will often have a status listed as Not responding next to the name.
  4. Right-click the application and select End task, or click the application once and select the End task button in the bottom right.
  5. Wait a few seconds for Windows to force the program to close.
Warning: Force-closing an application will result in the loss of any unsaved data within that specific program. Always attempt to wait a minute to see if the program recovers on its own before using this method.

Troubleshooting

What if the application still won't close?

Occasionally, a process may be "stubborn" and refuse to close via the standard Processes tab. In this case:

  1. In Task Manager, click on the Details tab.
  2. Find the .exe file associated with the program (e.g., chrome.exe or outlook.exe).
  3. Right-click the process and select End process tree. This kills the main program and every background process linked to it.
