Common Causes

Audio crackling, popping, or stuttering during Microsoft Teams or Zoom calls is usually caused by outdated audio drivers, incorrect sound enhancements, or bandwidth issues. This guide walks you through the most effective fixes to restore clear audio on your Windows 11 device.

Initial Checks

  1. Restart your computer to clear temporary system glitches.
  2. Unplug and reconnect your headset, speakers, or USB audio device.
  3. Close unnecessary browser tabs and applications to free up system resources.
  4. Check that your internet connection is stable by visiting a website or running a speed test.

Detailed Instructions

1. Select the Correct Audio Output Device

  1. Click the Start button and select Settings.
  2. In the left-hand menu, click System, then select Sound.
  3. Under Output, use the dropdown menu to select your preferred speakers or headset.
  4. Under Input, ensure your correct microphone is selected.
  5. Test the audio by speaking into the microphone and checking if the input volume bar moves.

2. Disable Audio Enhancements

  1. Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and select Sound settings.
  2. Scroll down and click More sound settings.
  3. In the Playback tab, right-click your active audio device and select Properties.
  4. Go to the Enhancements tab.
  5. Check the box for Disable all enhancements or Disable all sound effects.
  6. Click Apply and then OK.
If you do not see an Enhancements tab, your audio driver may not support this feature. Proceed to the driver update section below.

3. Adjust the Audio Sample Rate

  1. Open Sound settings and click More sound settings.
  2. Right-click your playback device and select Properties.
  3. Click the Advanced tab.
  4. Under Default Format, try changing the selection to a different quality, such as 2 channel, 16 bit, 44100 Hz (CD Quality).
  5. Click Apply and test your audio during a call.

4. Update Your Audio Drivers

  1. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand the Audio inputs and outputs section.
  3. Right-click your audio device and select Update driver.
  4. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  5. If Windows finds an update, follow the prompts to install it and restart your computer.
Avoid downloading drivers from third-party websites. Always use Windows Update or the manufacturer's official support page (e.g., Dell, HP, Lenovo, or Realtek).

Microsoft Teams

  1. Open Teams and click the ... (More) menu, then select Settings.
