Common Causes

When your computer takes several minutes to become usable after powering on, the most common culprit is a bloated list of startup applications. These are programs that launch automatically in the background, consuming CPU and RAM before you have even opened your first work document. By analysing and disabling non-essential startup items, you can significantly reduce boot times and improve overall system responsiveness.

Windows 10 and 11 Instructions

Windows provides a centralised way to manage startup apps via the Task Manager, making it easy to identify which programs are impacting your performance.

Using Task Manager

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc on your keyboard to open the Task Manager.
  2. If the window is small, click More details at the bottom to expand the view.
  3. Click on the Startup tab (on Windows 11, this is the icon that looks like a speedometer on the left-hand sidebar).
  4. Review the list of applications. Look at the Startup impact column; apps labelled as High have the most significant effect on boot time.
  5. Right-click on any non-essential application and select Disable.
Tip: If you are unsure what a specific process does, right-click the item and select Search online to find more information about the software.

Using Windows Settings

  1. Click the Start menu and select the Settings (gear icon).
  2. Navigate to Apps > Startup.
  3. Toggle the switch to Off for any applications you do not need running immediately upon login.
Caution: Do not disable items related to your antivirus software, audio drivers, or system utilities (such as Windows Security or Realtek Audio), as this may leave your system vulnerable or disable hardware functionality.

macOS Instructions

Apple computers manage startup items through "Login Items," which can be adjusted within the System Settings.

Managing Login Items

  1. Click the Apple Menu in the top-left corner of your screen and select System Settings (or System Preferences on older versions).
  2. Navigate to General > Login Items.
  3. Under the Open at Login section, select the application you wish to remove.
  4. Click the minus (–) button at the bottom of the list to prevent that app from launching at startup.
  5. Additionally, review the Allow in the Background section and toggle off any third-party helpers that do not need to run constantly.

Troubleshooting Performance Issues

If you have disabled unnecessary startup apps but your machine is still lagging, the issue may be related to deeper system resources or software conflicts.

Further Steps to Analyse Performance

After disabling startup items, remember to restart your computer to verify the improvement in boot speed.
